So, uh... hi.
It's been a few months since we officially ended the strip, and in the meantime I've started up a new one - My Name Is Might Have Been, a webcomic about rock, the end of the world, and tiny plastic guitars (and written with currently-slumming World Fantasy Award-nominated author Catherynne M. Valente). But the official ending to HotS hasn't been far from my mind.
You folks paid us good money to give you an ending for Branch. And it's taken a while, but we wanted to make sure it was worth it. You can look in the forums for my behind-the-scenes explanation of why it took so long, but the art on this one should tell you that Roni's been working her tuchis off. And God bless her.
Anyway. I don't want to blab too long. But Branch ended, surprisingly, in magic. And I'm happy about this.
Something very much like this happened a long time ago to me myself.
It wasn't until we tried to do a stand alone strip that I realized just how long they take, as a whole. Previously, they've been staggered. We kick around an idea for a couple of months, and hash out the script while we're while we're working on another storyline, then really buckle down on the visuals over a few days when the deadline was looming. If we had a problem, we could throw in a few stand alone strips to stall. Not only were we doing this without any filler, it's The Last One, so it had to be just right.
The idea was obvious, to me at least. What happens when a geek disappears for several months? An MMO, of course! However this a left us in the awkward place of Ferrett trying to make a script for someone else's idea involving a game he'd never played. I myself haven't played in several months, so I had to do my research in a round about manner. And of course, being detail freaks, we had a lot of emails and links to work out the fiddly bits. We hadn't forgotten you guys, we just wanted to do it right.
A couple have you have asked when i was planning on doing a new project as well. I'm kicking around some ideas, but nothing seriously. I'm waiting for my professional life to be a bit more settled before embarking on anything new, but don't worry I'm not out of the game, and now that we're done here, I'm looking towards new things. I'm happy where we've left it, and I hope you are too. Thanks for reading.
